Project Overview

EQPID developed an exterior design proposal for the CG63300 large CNC cylindrical grinding machine, reorganizing its enclosure architecture, viewing areas, operator interface and color, material and finish (CMF) relationships. The design establishes a more unified and distinctive product identity while retaining the technical character of large-scale precision machine-tool equipment.

The original equipment photograph carries the CG50300NC designation, while the later design proposal is labeled CG63300. These refer to the same machine at different stages of its model designation.

Project Background

Large CNC cylindrical grinding machines are characterized by their elongated bodies, multiple functional zones and extensive protective enclosures. A key objective of this project was to establish a coherent overall appearance while accommodating the machine's existing engineering layout and operational requirements.

The CG63300 design proposal focuses on the exterior enclosure, viewing windows, end-panel geometry and operator control area. Light-colored end covers, a dark upper working zone and a continuous blue lower accent establish a clear visual hierarchy. Elongated viewing windows, defined panel divisions and directional end forms further strengthen the machine's overall silhouette.

Rather than relying on decorative additions, the design organizes the machine's individual areas into a more consistent visual system, giving the equipment a more integrated and purposeful industrial product identity.

Design Challenge

Establishing visual order across a large machine envelope.

Large machine tools have substantial exterior surfaces and pronounced horizontal proportions. Without a coordinated approach to their enclosures and functional zones, the overall appearance can read as a collection of separate components rather than a unified product.

The design challenge centered on three priorities: coordinating the enclosure, end structures and panel divisions into a complete product silhouette; incorporating viewing windows, operator controls and protective areas into the overall design; and using proportion, tonal contrast and color rhythm to reinforce the machine's technical character without excessive decoration.

Before

The original CG50300NC photograph shows a long white-and-blue machine enclosure, a series of viewing windows and a freestanding operator console. The design reads primarily through its functional components and engineering structure, with the blue central enclosure forming the dominant visual element.

This original configuration provided the starting point for reorganizing the machine's exterior into a more unified product language.

Design Strategy

01 | Establishing a Clear Exterior Hierarchy

The relationship between the end covers, upper working enclosure and lower base creates a distinct visual hierarchy. Directional geometric forms at the ends complement the elongated body, helping the machine avoid a flat or monotonous appearance.

02 | Organizing Viewing Areas with Rhythm and Continuity

Dark viewing windows extend along the machine body, while defined panel boundaries establish an orderly horizontal rhythm. The darker areas create visual continuity without eliminating the distinction between individual viewing sections.

03 | Strengthening Product Identity Through CMF

Light-colored exterior panels, dark gray working areas and blue horizontal accents form the primary CMF system. The blue elements extend along the lower body and connect with selected linear details, reinforcing a recognizable technical character without compromising the machine's professional appearance.

04 | Coordinating the Operator Interface with the Overall Design

The operator console retains its distinct functional form while sharing the machine's visual language through coordinated geometry, color and visual hierarchy. This relationship helps the console read as part of the overall product rather than an isolated component.

05 | Supporting Further Engineering Evaluation

The exterior proposal uses relatively clear panel divisions, parting lines and layered surfaces. The design intent is to balance product expression with engineering practicality. Actual manufacturability remains subject to detailed engineering and production validation.

SIDM Perspective

Good to Use. The viewing windows and operator console are considered as part of the overall exterior organization, establishing a clearer visual relationship between the working area, operator interface and machine body. Actual usability, visibility and maintenance access require validation against the machine's engineering configuration and working conditions.

Good to Look At. The design establishes a consistent product language through its overall silhouette, panel divisions, tonal contrast and blue linear accents. Rather than relying on the machine's size and mechanical structure alone, the exterior uses a more deliberate arrangement of form and color to communicate a complete industrial product identity.

Good to Manufacture. The exterior proposal uses relatively clear panel divisions, parting lines and layered surfaces. The design intent is to balance product expression with engineering practicality. Structural details, sheet-metal fabrication, assembly and cost implications remain subject to engineering evaluation.

After

The CG63300 proposal combines a dark upper enclosure, elongated viewing windows, geometric end structures and a continuous blue lower accent to create a more layered silhouette. The operator console coordinates with the overall CMF system, while the panel divisions and color relationships establish a more consistent exterior language.

The design focuses on bringing the protective enclosure, viewing areas, operator interface and exterior panels together as a more complete product system.

Result

The CG63300 exterior design proposal establishes a clearer overall form and a more distinctive visual identity. Through coordinated end-panel geometry, enclosure segmentation, viewing-window organization, operator-interface styling and a unified CMF system, the machine presents a more integrated and purposeful industrial product appearance.

The available material supports an assessment of the design-stage outcome, but does not establish improvements in production implementation, machining performance, operator experience or commercial value.
